I really enjoy Haitian cuisine, particularly griot and fried beef, so after driving by this nondescript several times and observing the fact that the restaurant was always slammed, decided to stop by today for a late lunch. I was starving since I hadn't had breakfast, so decided to start of with an order of alka -- malanga and cod fish fritters -- which I had never tried before. Perfectly cooked, and with a bit of heat from the peppers incorporated into the filling, these were a wonderful way to make their acquaintance. Of course, I chose the griot (fried pork chunks), with rice and beans, fried plantains, and piklis (spicy cabbage salad). I cannot stress enough how tender, well-seasoned, and perfectly cooked the griot was. DELICIOUS. Fried plantains were also well-cooked and plentiful, while rice was decent but a bit bland. They serve the griot plate with a side of ox tail sauce which amps up the taste of the rice. Piklis was perfect! Hot, but not overly so as is the case with other Haitian eateries I've frequented. Another notable difference between L'Auberge and other Haitain restaurants is the fact that service is PHENOMENAL. And I do mean PHENOMENAL. My entire meal with appetizer, drink, entree, extra piklis, and a side of rice to take home for my leftover griot, was only $12.75. It doesn't get much better than that.
